The roses used were item no. 20435772 in red and cream. 60 bushes of each colour were required for a total of 4320(!) rose buds.
Organisers' Statement
A road safety awareness day was held by a group of concerned students at the Tremough campus of Falmouth University on Monday 11th November, including a car which they had completely covered in flowers.
The event was organised by six third year Broadcasting students after seeing an article in the West Britain reporting 52 road deaths in Cornwall this year. "I have to admit we had no idea what a big issue road safety is in the South West until we started doing our research" said Jonathan Profaska, one of the six. "We got in touch with the guys at Brake and the local council, they were a massive help providing us with leaflets, advise and information."
It took the boys around 4000 flowers, which they got at a discounted price
from GT Decorations to cover the car
"And really we could still have done with more" admitted Tom West,
another member of the team. Tom, Jonathan, Adam, David, Christian and another Tom
spent the day in the Universities canteen manning a stall handing out leaflets,
stickers and reflective armbands.
"There's a particularly dangerous stretch of road between the campus and Asda
that students often walk along. There are no pavements or anything like that so
the armbands seemed like a good idea, not as a solution but at least something to
help until something is done about it" said Adam.
"Young male drivers are statistically the most at risk" explained the boys. "So local universities and colleges seemed like an ideal place to focus our efforts."
The car, a sombre sight, acted as an eye-caching thought provoker and certainly stopped plenty of students in their tracks as the day progressed. "We definitely achieved what we set out to do today" said Christian "which was just to make people think."
