Till Death Do Us Part: Gothic Weddings

Does a white poofy princess dress and plenty of pink sound like your worst nightmare of a wedding? The traditional ceremony and reception isn’t for everyone. Go in the complete opposite direction with your nuptials by planning a gothic wedding.
Take inspiration from celebrity weddings such as that of Dita Von Teese or Avril Lavigne; and if you are a fan of films such as The Corpse Bride or The Nightmare before Christmas then these would act as great themes for the event. You could even have skeletons dressed up as a bride and groom as cake toppers bringing a whole new meaning to the term candy skull.

The Venue

A gothic castle in a remote woodland area would make a perfect location for an alternative wedding. You could even get married in the dungeons with your aisle lit by candles. Spooky! Unfortunately not everyone is lucky enough to have a castle on their doorstep so try converting an industrial unit or a disused building for an urban edge.

The Flowers

Although wilting flowers may stick to your theme it is hard to find fresh flowers in dark shades, especially so in the spring and summer seasons. Get exactly what you want with artificial flowers online.
Team classic red roses with white roses or a scattering of stephanotis. Alternatively pick black lilies and spray with a glitter spray for some added sparkle. If your theme revolves around deep purples then morning glory, anemone and lisianthus flowers will work seamlessly with your colour scheme.

The Dress

So bling and satin aren’t really your thing but you still want to look beautiful and feel special on your big day. Coloured dresses are becoming increasingly popular and you may even opt for an all black ensemble.
A corseted top will show off your best assets and make your waist look tiny and ruching is a great way of adding texture and interest without gems.

The Centrepieces

During the reception your guests will spend a lot of time at their tables as this is where they will be eating. So, you’ll want to have some interesting centrepieces to decorate the table.
Lace tablecloths can add interest especially when layered over bold colours; and feathers can look highly impressive as an alternative to real flowers. Light up the room with a scattering of different sized candles or add class and opulence with a large ornate candelabra.
Our favourite idea is to use old branches in a vase to form a bunch which looks like an old, wiry tree. You can hang lanterns or tea lights from this for a centrepiece that is rustic but oh-so-chic. If you want a floral touch then wind a few of the branches with cream flower garlands for a subtle understated little extra.

The Little Touches

For the final touches to an outfit add a black veil, a top hat and even some lace fingerless gloves. The groom’s outfit can even be customised by wearing some simple skull and crossbones cufflinks. Let the flower girls wear fairy wings and let your imagination run wild. It’s your wedding after all – so do it your way.
